Pumpkin Soup!

Fall is here and the temperatures are going down now in Chicago. Time for some pumpkin soup to warm up!!! This is my second try at this and it turned out pretty good this time!

* 2 tablespoons safflower oil
* 1 onion
* carrots as desired
* celery as desired
* 1 can pumpkin
* 1-2 sweet potatoes
* vegetable broth as desired
* cream sherry as desired
* optional cream as desired
* sea salt to taste
* 1/2 teaspoon curry powder
* 1/4 teaspoon grated ginger
* 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
* 1/8 teaspoon allspice

Put all vegetables into the blender and mix until smooth. Place blended vegetables and all other ingredients into a soup pot, stir and simmer. That’s it, enjoy!

Stormy Weather and Internet Dependency Just Don’t Mix

Now that I am finally back online after Tuesday’s crazy storm, I have come to realize that survival without the internet has become increasingly difficult for me. I guess I shouldn’t complain – we at least had power, but since no one in my family cooks and most of the restaurants in the area were closed… I almost starved. Well, not really – we do have “food” in our house, but it is the kind of food that involves preparation… not the kind that arrives to your door ready to be stuffed into your mouth. Using the internet to arrange for this kind of exchange is something I typically depend on.

A huge thanks goes out to Dunkin Donuts and China Town for insuring my survival over the past couple days… I may have just starved to death… or choked on inedible food of my own creation if it wasn’t for you. There is a reason I went to architecture school and not culinary school – a very, very good reason… just ask anyone I’ve ever cooked for.

My neighbor’s car… ouch! I hope the rest of Chicagoland is doing well!

The Etsy Experience So Far

For the past couple weeks I have spent more time working on my website and setting up my Etsy store than I’ve actually spent making any new artwork, but my experience on Etsy has been absolutely wonderful so far. I love the fact that the artists and craftspeople on Etsy actually HELP one another and give out advice and support that is hard to find among your friends and family, let alone among the people you are technically “competing” with. The community there gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling I haven’t had about the world in years… I love artists, I really do! That is probably why I am one.

With that said… since I have no works in progress to post at the moment, I leave you with a picture of spray paint cans. Aren’t they pretty?!?

Sunblock + Spraypaint

I have been working on a set of two new abstract paintings, here is a picture of the first after completion yesterday afternoon. It was painted on canvas using acrylic paints in metallic copper and earth tones with blue and green accents. Canvas #2 is underway and will be posted soon!

So sad to hear today that the Empire Carpet guy is dead. Every time I hear one of their commercials, it reminds me of a safety assembly we had at our school when I was little. They were trying to teach us to memorize the number to the police department (obviously this was before the 911 emergency number) and they asked us if anyone knew what it was. Just a few people raised their hands. Then they asked us if we knew the number to Empire and the whole auditorium shouted out “588-2300 Empire” in unison. Funny, I never did get around to learning that other phone number.

Rest in peace Mr. Hauldren. You will be missed.
