CLOSED EYE MEDITATION


Meditation does not need to be difficult or involved, it is simply a means of connecting yourself with the present moment. To do a closed eye meditation, just find a place where you can be comfortable and sit or lie down. Take a few deep breaths, allow yourself to relax and close your eyes.Focus your attention onto the sounds, smells and feelings around you. What sounds to you hear in the environment around you? Do they sound close, or are they from far away? What sensations do you feel on your skin? If you are outside, can you feel a breeze blowing across your body or feel sunlight on your face? Notice how it feels to have your body supported by the earth beneath you. Notice how your clothing feels against your skin. Notice how the air smells. Notice the temperature and how it makes your body feel.Please note that you could be isolated on a mountaintop or in the middle of a crowded city with all of it’s noises and it does not make the slightest difference. Just observe your surroundings, become present with them, and enjoy their beauty.

OPEN EYE MEDITATION


Open eye meditations are a wonderful way to quiet the mind, while still maintaining a connection with the outside world. They also are a great way of getting in touch with the feeling of gratitude for all that we are given.You can choose to focus on just about anything in an open eye meditation. Something as simple as a candle can be used or you can focus on larger scale things, such as ocean waves, the sky, a roaring fireplace or a waterfall. Flowers or leaves are also great items to reflect upon. Once you have selected something to put your attention on, get yourself comfortable and take a few deep breaths. Inhale fresh clean air and exhale out any tension or negativity you might have.Once you feel completely relaxed, turn your attention over toward your object. Look at it as though it is your first time seeing it. Notice everything you can about it. Notice the variations of color, the structure of it and the way it moves. Notice any sound that you hear around you. Feel the air on your skin. If you are outside, notice how the sun interacts with your object. If you are watching a fire, notice the dance between the light and shadows that is created as it burns. Look at your object until you feel that you have seen every part of it possible and then just sit with it. Allow yourself and your object to just be present with one another. Enjoy the silence in your mind.If you notice your mind begin to wander, just gently take your attention and place it back on your object. The goal of open eye meditations is to practice being present in any given moment so that you can truly enjoy the experiences of your life. Stay with the meditation for as long as you find it enjoyable.

MIRROR MEDITATION


Sometimes in life we can find ourselves surrounded by negative people and the negativity they produce can often cause us stress, take our energy and even sometimes wreak havoc in our lives. Here is a meditation to help you protect yourself from the negativity of others.Sit or lie down and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths and exhale out any tension, stress or negativity that you feel within you. Notice a bright light begin to form around you until it envelops your entire body and see this light increase in brightness until it is almost blinding. Feel the heat from the light penetrate through your body and dissolve any negativity from your being. Stay with this feeling for as long as you feel necessary.Once you feel you have been completely purified, allow this light to fill you with light and love. Feel your body filling with light and love until you are so full that the area around you begins to fill as well. As the area around you fills, notice the energies begin to take the shape of a sphere around your body. See this entire sphere fill with love and light and as it becomes full notice the exterior of the sphere begin to crystallize into a mirrored surface. Know that this crystalline mirror is designed to protect you from negativity while still allowing loving energy in and allowing you to send loving energy out. It filters out only the lower frequency negative energies, bouncing them back to their source just as a mirror does with light. Leave it up to the universe to deal with the energy as it sees fit once it is on its way back to its source.

This is a meditation that you can do not only for yourself, but for others in your family as well and you can even create spheres large enough to encompass your entire home should you feel the need to do so. You can do this meditation as often as you feel necessary – from every morning, to once a week or even just on occasion.

MORE CANCER CENTERS + DOCTORS ARE ENCOURAGING USE OF REIKI

With groups like the Society of Integrative Oncology, a multi-disciplinary organization of professionals, touting the advantages of complementary cancer treatment and recovery, new methodologies, including Reiki are gaining in popularity. More and more cancer centers and oncologists are beginning to recognize the benefits that these treatments – once dismissed with a snicker by those “in-the-know” – are providing for those who just don’t know where to turn to address issues like the pain and stress associated with cancer and its conventional treatments.

Complementary therapies – not to be confused with “alternative” therapies, which are unproven treatments – have gradually made their way to the forefront of cancer care as well-known oncologists who are lauded experts in their field begin to promote these supportive treatments as a natural part of cancer care. Even the National Institutes of Health operates a National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, researching complementary therapies and then recommending proven ones for integration into cancer programs nationwide, including those associated with mesothelioma cancer.

Lately, the ancient form of spiritual healing known as Reiki (pronounced Ray-kee) has earned plenty of attention as a potential complementary therapy for all kinds of cancer, including mesothelioma. Rooted in Tibetan Buddhism, Reiki was “rediscovered” in the early 20th century and became particularly popular in the late 1990s as Reiki Masters began to teach non-Buddhists that life energy flows through all persons, this technique strives to increase the life force energy of a sick individual, therefore helping him achieve better health and happiness.

Like many complementary therapies, Reiki takes a holistic approach – treating mind, body, and spirit – and is safe and natural. Many cancer patients who have tried it note an overall feeling of peace, relaxation, and well-being when the treatment is complete. Totally non-invasive, Reiki therapy involves the laying of hands on the fully-clothed patient by the Reiki practitioner. His/her hands travel through 12 different positions, staying in each place for about 5 minutes for a total of about an hour per treatment. The feeling of invigoration or tranquility results from the fact that Reiki causes the body’s molecules to vibrate at a higher intensity, hence, dissolving energy blockages that lead to disharmony and disease, Reiki masters note. This assists in controlling pain, easing stress, or lessening side effects of traditional treatments like chemotherapy, including nausea and other debilitating problems. It is also believed to improve immune function.

With continuous positive reactions from many cancer patients, prestigious cancer centers like Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center offer Reiki classes for cancer patients, including Sloan Kettering mesothelioma patients on a regular basis as well as in-service classes for their hospital staff. Other well-known hospitals to jump on the Reiki bandwagon include Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Columbia Presbyterian, the Yale Center, and Cancer Treatment Centers of America. The list continues to grow as patients use tools like the internet to advertise their positive reactions to this ancient healing art, enticing others to give it a try.

VISUALIZATION


Visualizations are basically day-dreams that are directed for a specific purpose. Everyone has the capability to “visualize” in their own way and there is no right or wrong way to do it. I have always been a visual person, so my visualizations are typically like movies that play in my mind. People who are more sound-oriented might experience their visualizations though sound and those who are touch-oriented can easily visualize by imagining how something would feel.A great way to practice visualization is to pick a room in your home that you spend a lot of time in. Take time to walk through the room and notice all of the details – from the color on the walls to the materials it is made of, the furnishings that fill it, the way that the light comes through the windows during the day, the breeze blowing through the windows, the sounds you hear while you are there, and even the memories you have made there. Take off your socks and feel the way the floor feels beneath your bare feet. Glide your hand across a piece of furniture in the room and feel the texture of it or sit down and notice how it feels. Once you feel you are ready to visualize, just sit or lay down and close your eyes. Imagine yourself in that room and see what comes to you. Can you see the room in your mind? Do you hear anything? Can you feel the textures of the materials you touched earlier in your mind? Can you replay memories of things that happened in that space in your mind? If you are able to do any one of those things, you have successfully visualized that room.Most of us visualize in one way or another every day whether we are aware of it or not. Unfortunately for most of us, our visualizations are usually not directed toward things that are in our best interest. If you worry about something and imagine a possible worst-case scenario event in your mind over and over again (whether done visually, though sound or touch) you are visualizing and helping to attract that worst case scenario to you. When you get a large number of people obsessing negatively over something (such as the economy at the moment) the effects of the collective visualization become much more powerful.

Learn to harness this power and direct it instead toward your greater good and the greater good of everyone we share this planet with. Pick something you would like to see change for the better and imagine it exactly as you wish it to be. Don’t focus on how it will get there, just enjoy visualizing the perfect end result and trust that the universe will find a way to make it happen for everyone‘s greatest good. See it, hear it or feel it in your mind and allow the energies of love, happiness and gratitude build up within you. These energies are just as important as the visualization itself. Once your being can no longer contain all of this energy, feel your third eye center begin to open up and direct the energy from your visualization out to the universe and to the situation you are trying to change. Stay with this feeling for as long as you wish.

CHAKRA MEDITATION


Sit upright with your feet flat on the floor and take a deep breath. Breathe in love and breathe out any tension you might have. Feel your body relax.  Visualize energy from the earth flowing up through your feet and legs into the first chakra at the base of your spine. Feel the energy fill up the first chakra, clean it and open it up until it glows a bright vibrant red.

After the first chakra has been cleaned, opened and filled, feel the energy start to overflow until it flows up into the second chakra. Feel the energy fill up the second chakra, clean it and open it up until it glows a bright bold orange.

After the second chakra has been cleaned, opened and filled, feel the energy start to overflow until it flows up into the third chakra. Feel the energy fill up the third chakra, clean it and open it up until it glows a bright sunny yellow.

After the third chakra has been cleaned, opened and filled, feel the energy start to overflow until it flows up into the fourth chakra. Feel the energy fill up the fourth chakra, clean it and open it up until it glows a bright emerald green.

After the fourth chakra has been cleaned, opened and filled, feel the energy start to overflow until it flows up into the fifth chakra. Feel the energy fill up the fifth chakra, clean it and open it up until it glows a bright cobalt blue.

After the fifth chakra has been cleaned, opened and filled, feel the energy start to overflow until it flows up into the sixth chakra. Feel the energy fill up the sixth chakra, clean it and open it up until it glows a bright bold indigo.

After the sixth chakra has been cleaned, opened and filled, feel the energy start to overflow until it flows up into the seventh chakra. Feel the energy fill up the seventh chakra, clean it and open it up until it glows a bright beautiful violet.

Feel the energy overflow from the seventh chakra out into the world around you. Feel yourself connected to God and to the world and everything in it. Feel divine energy flow into your crown chakra from the universe and then down through the other six chakras. Feel this energy heal you and fill you up until energy shoots out through the tips of your fingers and toes. Feel the energy then flow down through your legs and feet into the earth and ground you. Sit with this feeling for as long as you like and then give thanks for it and open your eyes.

LIGHT MEDITATION


Sit or lie down and get comfortable.  Take a few deep breaths and feel your body start to relax.  Breathe in positivity and breathe out any tension, negativity, fear or stress you might have.  Feel your crown chakra begin to open and visualize a bright white light coming toward you from all directions.  Feel this light enter your crown chakra and begin to fill your body starting with your head and progressing downward until it fills your hands, legs and feet.  Feel this white light fill you with love.  Feel it penetrate each and every cell in your body until your body is so saturated with love and light that it can no longer be contained within you.  As the light continues to fill your being, feel the love and light explode outward from your body taking with it any remaining residue of negativity until you exist as a channel of pure love and light.  Feel the love and light continue to flow into you from all directions and shoot outward from you in all directions to the world and everyone in it.  You can stay with this feeling for as long as you like.

SIMPLE MANTRA MEDITATION


Sit or lie down comfortably and take a few deep breaths. Breathe in peace and exhale out any stress or tension.  Feel your body completely relax from head to toe.  Pick a word or sound that means something special to you. Say the word or sound to yourself and focus your attention on it. Do this gently and repeat the mantra as often as needed to keep any thoughts from entering your mind. If any thoughts should enter, just repeat the mantra to yourself again and redirect your attention to it. With practice you should notice that you will be able to spend more time in silence and less time on the mantra itself.

LOVE MEDITATION


In this meditation you will focus on sending love out into the world.  Start with someone in your life you truly care about and feel the love that you have for them.  Feel the flow of love that is created within you as you think of them and appreciate them build up inside of you until it fills up your entire being and then once you feel that it can no longer be contained within you, let it burst out from your soul and direct the love to the loved one you are thinking about.  Once you have mastered the art of sending love to those you know and care for, expand your love to encompass the entire planet and all who reside within it.  As you send out love to the world, not only will you receive love back, but everyone who received your love will become more loving themselves.

I would recommend practicing this on the people you care most about for a few days until you get the hang of building up the energy and directing it.  If you practice this every day, by the next group meditation you should be ready to send it to the entire planet ;)
